The methodological recommendation is the result of research within the framework of a three-year project entitled "Research on appropriate intersection modifications in relation to capacity and environmental impacts", the aim of which is to permanently increase the efficiency of the transport system while reducing negative effects on the environment, public health and climate change while maintaining the competitiveness of transport.

The methodological recommendation focuses on the potential use of unused unconventional modifications of intersections in the Czech Republic, which lead to an increase in their capacity, a reduction in the dwell time when passing through the intersection and thus a reduction in emissions of pollutants produced by road traffic in their area and surroundings. For the implementation of the research, locations were selected within the Czech Republic for the implementation and evaluation of surveys at intersections with inadequate capacity, for which modifications were proposed without expanding the construction area of the intersection within the built-up area, i.e. using the existing space, or only with minimal partial expansion so as to increase their throughput and thereby reduce emissions. A microsimulation tool was used for the overall assessment of the capacity and effectiveness of the current state and unconventional modifications. Emission modeling software approved by Czech legislation was used to calculate emissions from road traffic.

The methodological recommendation is a comprehensive guide that contains specifications for individual alternative unconventional intersections for application on roads in the Czech Republic. For individual types of intersections, it is defined under what conditions it is appropriate to implement new types of intersections, the structural layout of these intersections and their partial variants, traffic management with a recommended signal plan including specific conditions for its creation, determination of maximum capacity and comparison with an equivalent conventional intersection for various traffic intensity load scenarios are also specified.
