In order to maintain the proper condition of buildings, bridges, roads and other structures, their regular maintenance is essential. It is often the case that if it is possible to catch a defect at the beginning of its development, the costs of its removal are much lower than after months or years of uncontrolled degradation. Locating a fault in time often means detecting it even before it is visible to the naked eye. Non-destructive diagnostic methods, including thermographic testing, are a key means of detecting hidden faults.

The purpose of the presented methodology is to provide an effective tool that will enable a quick assessment of the condition of transport infrastructure objects and help with the determination of places where a visual inspection or detailed diagnosis needs to be focused. The measurement is non-contact and can be performed without the need to exclude road traffic. The methodology describes possible ways of using infrared thermography, especially when diagnosing the condition of bridges, roads and tunnels.

The presented methodology was developed as part of project TE01020168 – Center for Efficient and Sustainable Transport Infrastructure (CESTI), with the financial support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic as part of the Center of Competence program. This methodology is intended for road administrators at all levels (state, region, city), planners, construction companies and other entities that can use data and processed outputs from thermographic measurement.
